State Subsidy for Unemployment
WELLINGTON’S HOPES £IO,OOO TO BE SPENT (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. The City Council proposes to al locate £IO,OOO for unemployed relief and hopes for a pound for pound subsidy from the Government. When the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates was asked the prospects of a subsidy he said that there was no harm in them hoping. He agreed with the Government assisting, not necessarily pound for pound, on approved works, but the Government was not going to put money into bitumen roads. The State already was giving subsidies on a certain class of work done by local bodies, but no definite policy on this method of assistance had been laid down.
LOAN NECESSARY
GOVERNMENT CONSENT AWAITED Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. Referring to the proposed £IO,OOO for unemployment relief the mayor said that Government consent to the loan had yet to be obtained. It was also to be noted that the expenditure would be spread over a reasonable period. There was just the danger, he said, that a false impression might be created by the bald statement that the council is arranging for a loan and that, as a result, there would be a considerable influx of unemployed to Wellington. The rule would be “Wellington men first.”
