NEW LYNN AFFAIRS

TOWN BOARD’S MEETING

The regular meeting of the New Lynn Town .Board was held last evening, the chairman, Mr. W. G. Lovie, presiding over a full attendance of members. The Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board advised the levy for 1927-28 in the town board district would be £615 4s Bd. This sum is a substantial increase on the amount that was fixed for the previous period. Mr. Hughes mentioned a restriction m regard to the expending of charitable aid moneys. He said that recipients of charitable aid relief from the New Lynn district were compelled to expend the money in another district. The chairman gave it as his opinion that the unfortunate people concerned received orders only for their requirements and it was out of consideration for their feelings that the orders were on firms other than those in their own districts. A donation of £5 towards the stipend ot the Plunket nurse in the district was agreed to. A suggestion that the triangle reserve should be set aside as a site for a memorial to New Lynn soldiers of the Great War, and that a monument be erected thereon was the spirit of a letter from the Rev. W. P. Rankin. The reverend, gentleman set the ball rolling in this connection on Anzac Day, when he collected the nucleus of a fund. Mr. Lpvie intimated that the board would.be prepared to go into any detailed suggestion submitted. Members supported the traffic inspector when a report was read from the Avondale Borough Council alleging indifference on his part regarding inspection duties on the Whau Bridge. In this connection the inspectors of both districts take a hand, and the discussion showed that it was the inspector from the neighbouring borough who was the prime mover in the charge. Mr. Lovie contended that Avondale had been erroneously informed and that New Lynn’s inspector was. on the bridge lon an average of 10 times to the other man’s once He contended that there was a “fly in the ointment’’ in that New Lynn

would not set out on a comprebe prosecution of motorists, etc. ~, Town Clerk was instructed to wr • to the Avondale Council stating actual position.
