WINTER RACING
JUMPING SEASON OPENS TO-MORROW
REVIEW OF EGMONT PROGRAMME
A number of Auckland district horses will be seen in action at Hawera to-morrow and on Saturday, on the occasion of the opening of the winter racing season by the Egmont Racing Club. With important events ahead the results of the racing at Hawera will be keenly awaited.
The jumping season will be officially inaugurated to-morrow at Hawera by the Egmont Racing Club. The meeting is for two days, the concluding day being fixed for Saturday. As usual fields will be on the average at this fixture, and with several jumpers engaged claiming more important engagements in the near future, the form will be closely followed. The big fences on this course are not difficult. and as the going promises to be good there should not be many mishaps. A start will be made at 11.40 a.m. tomorrow with the
This contest usually discloses the future winner of the Century Hurdles at Wanganui. The event is further interesting in that of the 11 acceptors, all but three are engaged in the big hurdles at Ellerslie. Some of the above have been racing recently, and a few others will be green as yet. BRIGADIER BILL, ENARE and KOAUAU are a good trio. The hack sprint always draw's a big field. This is the TELEGRAPH HANDICAP
For once this race will not be run in divisions. There are some speedy ones over six furlongs, and on recent running it looks very probable that the stake will come North on this occasion. A trio that take the fancy are BERINTHI A, TOWN BIRD and BABY BUN, All these are smart beginners, and with a position gained early in the affair they should more than hold their own with the Southerners. There are some unknown quantities engaged in the HACK STEEPLECHASE
Little River,, if memory serves one correctly, *nas already scored over the big fences, but he is still unreliable. Eonmark is a possibility, and then there are Lady Spalpeen, Labour Morn, Goldpiece, All Wind, Gilgai, Pikimai (running in Nukumai’s colours), Dead Sweet and Rayo. They are all good jumpers, and should be able to negotiate the fences. LITTLE RIVER, LADY SPALPEEN and GILGAI will be among the favoured ones. Ten remain in the big event, the EGMONT STEEPLECHASE Of 400sovs; 2£ miles.
The only winner over the fences of late has been Passin’ Through, and his success at Ellerslie last month was a good performance. He has all the weight, however, and this may keep him further back than usual over the early part. Llewellyn too is in form, although he is inclined to run his fences down. Kendal will be improved by his outings, and it remains to be seen whether he has come on sufficiently to account for the opposition tomorrow. Dick is to make a reappearance, and he may need the race. He has already won on this course. Charlatan is in good fettle, and will do
better on the Northern trip than he did last year. The field is completed with Peter Rosa, Birkenella, Lady Comet, San Forte and Lupineel, each cf whom will have friends. So early in the season makes it an extremely difficult event to come to a decision upon. However, PASSIN’ THROUGH, LLEWELLYN and LADY COMET may be the best. This done with, the racers on the flat wiM next be catered for. The open sprint follows. This is the
A big field of 16 will lend importance to the draw, for the straight is not much more than a furlong. Benzora has been racing prominently, but unluckily to date, and a turn for the better is just about due. Sun TJp will need a race or two, and Hipo has of late been racing over middle distances. Orchid and Bonogne are possibilities, and Oration, with Reed up, will not lack support. Lady Bentinck should go well on her home track, and further down the list are Bevis, Archeen, Papaponga, Matinee and Tip Hree. The best performances will probably come from those named, with a preference expressed for BENZORA, ARCHEEN and ORATION. The principal flat event follows. This is the '
Diogenes has not raced since the spring, and good horse as he is, may not be good enough for the seasoned horses. Yoma is in good order, for he ran two very solid races at Awapuni recently, and was a bit unlucky. Mint Leaf stands a chance if persuaded to do his best, and with other horses such as Opa, Shining Armour, Lady Anstruther, Danae, Vivo, Captain Gazeley, Diamond Ring and Orazone, the contest is given a very open appearance. Orazone failed at Awapuni, because the distance was too short, and here she will be better suited. YOMA, ORAZONE and SHINING ARMOUR make most appeal. The seven-race programme will conclude with the TAWHITI HANDICAP Of 175sovs; 8£ furlongs.
In the event of Partaga ami Acred not starting in the hack sprint they will be well sought after here, although O. Cox’s stable has Barryander in as well as Acred. Paitonu, Manly, Henna, Mister Gamp, and Lady Acre read best of those further down the scale. To sum up, PARTAGA, ACRED and PAITONU will probably go out the most favoured. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS P. Mcßrearty will ride Birkenella at Egmont and Wanganui. R. McTavish rides Green Bonnet and Town Bird to-morrow. W. Rennie is to ride Peter Rosa, Star Shell and Little River. G. Holland will be on Lady Spalpeen in the Steeplechase to-morrow. W. H. Jones pilots Captain Gazeley, Matinee and Tangerim. A. M. Wright overlooked the acceptance with his team at Egmont, but may make the trip for the second day. R. Reed was to have been on Nukumai. Reed will ride Oration in the sprint event.
