Speed Contest
CHASE ON AORANGI Cat and Butcher A Madagascar cat and the butcheron the Aorangi indulged in a speed contest on the deck yesterday afternoon. After an exhibition which would have done credit to an amateur athletic contest the butcher won.
The animal belonged to one of the lady passengers from Chicago. It is half-monkey, half-cat, with beautiful fawn-coloured fur and a long tail marked with striking black and white rings.
Yesterday afternoon, while his mistress was ashore, the Madagascar cat broke loose and naturally went adventuring. He must have thought that he had returned to Madagascar, for he careered up and down the deck in great glee.
But the butcher thought otherwise. He went out and tried to secure the animal again. A clutch at the excited animal was rewarded by a nasty bite on the thumb, and the cat made off up and down the deck. Once it took refuge in the rigging, but the butcher was a wily man and got it down. After an excellent run, which ended with a breathless cat and a still more breathless butcher, the animal was returned to its mistress’s cabin.
