“THE BEST PEOPLE”
THE LAUGHING COMEDY PLAY Delicious examples of sophisticated satire are said to abound in “The Best People,” the delightful three-act comedy by David James and Avery Hopwood, which is to be presented for a brief season, commencing at His Theatre on Saturday evening under the direction of Mr. E. J. Carroll. “The Best People” is full of genuine fun and it is largely because
behind the witty, clever dialogue there! is admirable charac- j terisation of all sorts! and conditions ofj people from the! “high-brow” to thej “shafoor,” and also! because of the! humorously complex! situations, the fin-! ished business, thef setting and dressing! that this comedy de- : lights. The play clev-
erly burlesques the frails of the modern parents who have ultra-modern children. Much of the humour is derived from the flapper daughter of the old New York aristocrats. This smart, up-to-the-minute maiden embodies all the physical, mental and social eccentricities of the genus as we know them. Utterly lacking in respect to her elders, careless of speech and conduct, and reckless of the consequences, she pursues her heedless way unchecked until the family chauffeur tames her. Another “horrible” example of modern youth is her brother. Between the two of them they succeed in making life a misery for their stern parents and austere uncle. The authors have made a very palpable hit in England. America, Australia and New Zealand with their clever comedy in which there is a feast of fun and a few home-truths which are designed to impress people of all ages. Most of the company are newcomers -and were specially selected for the particular t> pes they are called on to portray. The Best People” will be presented for six nights and one special matinee on Saturday, 21st, and the box plans for this season are now open at Lewis R. Eady and Son, Ltd., and as excepheavy booking was recorded in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, and other towns throughout the Dominion, intending patrons would be well advised to secure their seats at the earliest opportunity.
