CELEBRATIONS OPENED TOWN GAILY DECORATED Press Association. GISBORNE, To-day. The jubilee celebrations opened today with a monster sports gathering and a fire brigade demonstration. The town is gaily bedecked with bunting and greenery. Many visitors have come for the festival. The Government is represented by the Hon. R. F. Bollard, who opens the Winter Show this evening. To-morrow he will be present at a luncheon to the pioneers. There will be a procession and other festivities. The weather to-day is cold and showery. On the journey from Napier Mr. Bollard called at Nuhaka to pay his respects to the dead chief lhaka Whanga, whose funeral takes place on Sunday, and will be distinguished by the attendance of a special guard provided by the Government as a mark of appreciation of the late Ihaka’s authority and loyalty.
