SAVING EXPENSE
MAN PLEADS GUILTY (From Our Own Con'espondent.J WHANGAREI, To-day. Duncan McLennan, jnr., pleaded guilty to smoking in a non-smoker railway carriage, and also to using insulting language to the guard. Questioned by the magistrate defendant said he did not use any insulting language, but pleaded guilty to save expense. He had just come out of hospital and could not afford to defend his case. The magistrate said under the circumstances the guard should have been brought along to prove the insulting language. He could not convict a man when he pleaded guilty to save expense. This part of the charge would be adjourned until the guard was brought along and his evidence taken. For smoking in the carriage he was fined 10s and costs,
