BURNS AND SHOCKNONAGENARIAN DIES
INMATE OF HOME OPEN FIRES CONDEMNED Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. An old woman, Amelia Ann Hayward, died in the hospital from burns. She was ninety years of age, and an inmate of the Jubilee Home. Mrs. Georgine Leith, who was in the next room, heard the deceased screaming at about three o'clock in the afternoon and found her at the door of her room. Mrs. Hayward's clothes were burning. Mrs. Leith threw water over her and a coat was wrapped round her and the flames were smothered. Mrs. Hayward was taken to the hospital and before she died she told the matron that she had been standing in front of the fire when her clothes became ignited.
At the inquest medical evidence was given to the effect that death was due to heart failure following shock from burns. In returning a verdict accordingly, the coroner, Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., expressed the “opinion" that open fireplaces as a means of heating were a danger to the elderly people in these institutions. He recommended that they be Replaced by some other means of heating.
