WHANGAREI SHOW
A GREAT SUCCESS OPENED IN FINE WEATHER (From Our Own Correspondent.') WHANG ARE I, To-day. The Whangarei Winter Show was opened by Mr. W. Jones, M.P., last evening. The weather was ideal and the attendance a record for an opening night. Other speakers were Mr. R. D. Finlayson, president, and Mr. L. J. Brake, mayor. It was the latter's first appearance in public as mayor. He made a strong appeal for co-operative effort in both town and country to make the show bigger and better. A practical way to attain this ideal was for all who could to become financial members. He hoped the townspeople would not let the country bear the whole burden of the greatest feature of the kind in the North. Four squads of boys and girls from the Whangarei public schools gave excellent exhibitions of calisthemics. A feature of the evening’s enjoyment was the Whangarei Melody Boys’ Orchestra. They gave one of the best programmes yet heard. The main building is devoted to trade exhibits, and the whole available space has been taken. The school work made a fine showing. On a long bench on the south side was a display of cookery and preserves. It is doubtful if these classes were ever so good previously. The full length of the north side is occupied with needlework. The whole it attractively decorated with greenery and bunting. The exhibits are interspersed with flowers. In the western end are the tea rooms controlled by the Catholic Church ladies. Over 20 sideshows add to the pleasure of the elders as well as the children.
Mr. C. P. Butler, secretary, and a capable committee are to be complimented on the thorough success of the 1927 show.
