MOTORISTS IN COURT
SPEEDERS AND OTHERS FINES INFLICTED “When you want to tip anyone with the mudguard of that car of yours, try a young man in preference to an old man of 70 of age; for while the former can jump out of the road the latter case will most likely be fatal.” That was the advice given to Harry Victor Harland by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., when he was charged in the Police Court this morning with negligent driving. Harland stated that it was a pure accident and after knocking the man down he pulled his car up within its own length. However, the affair cost him 40s and costs. For exceeding the speed limit, it cost Ernest Leng 10s, John Wilkie 15s, D. J. Richardson 10s on each of two charges, and Bertie E. Jenkins 16s. While for failing to produce a motor licence John Ironside was fined 10s. A charge of negligent driving against Harry Rigby, who collided with a motor-cycle at the intersection of Queen and Victoria Streets, was dismissed. The magistrate held that the motor-cyclist was at fault in not keeping a look-out to the right.
