AGAIN IN LIMELIGHT
MR. HUGHES COMPLAINING
DUKE AND A HOSPITAL
SYDNEY, May 5. The capacity which some Australians lave for keeping a row going is remarkable. At present one is raging up in the Blue Mountains in connection with the opening of a memorial hospital at Katoomba. Originally it was planned to be opened by the Duke of York, but officialdom found that there was not room for this function on the schedule. In the meantime, the engraving on the foundation stone had been made, statin? that the Duke would open the hospital. Mr. Dooley, Speaker of the New Fouth Wales Parliament, is also the member for Katoomba. Likewise he was in close attendance with the ducal party. It is a matter of history how Mr. Dooley held up the Duke’s car and Persuaded him to open the hospital, so that the legend on the stone would be correct. But Mr. Dooley would not have done this if he had guessed what a hornet's nest he would bring about his ears. The latest entrant into the lists is Mr. W. M. Hughes, who appears to be coming Into the limelight again. He spoke warmly on the subject and demanded that the committee of the hospital which had supported Mr. Dooley should resign. Naturally "Billy” Hughes had the crowd with him ~he always sees to # that. In this case the soldiers were indignant because the opening took place hurriedly and they and their families were not present. To outsiders it is very hard to follow it is all about, but it is a “dinkum” row.
