Dr. Buck's New Post at Honolulu
POLYNESIAN RESEARCH AUCKLAND INSTITUTE TRIBUTE Last evening Dr. Buck gave hi!? final lecture under the auspices of the Auckland Institute. He will leave in July to undertake five years’ ethnological research in the Pacific for the Bishop Museum, Honolulu. His lectures have been a popular feature of the institute’s courses for a number of years. At the conclusion of his address, which dealt with in part the three months’ research he.had carried out in the Cook Islands, Dr. Buck said that the study of ethnology was vastly in-
teresting and he hoped his audience would not blame him for accepting a position with the Bishop Museum in Honolulu for five years to carry the research on. In proposing a vote of thanks, Mr. H. E. Vaile said that Dr. Buck possessed the silver-tongued eloquence of his race and a fund of natural humour. He had greatly assisted the Auckland Museum and they would be sorry to lose him. He hoped the New Zealand Government would see fit to make it worth the doctor’s while to return, for he was a man they could ill-afford to lose. He then moved “That the Auckland Institute and Museum records its keen appreciation of I)r. P. H. Buck’s valuable work in Polynesian research, and, whilst regretting the loss of his association and help, wishes him all possible success in his new sphere of work.” Mr. George Graham, in seconding the motion, expressed regret, on behalf of the natives, at Dr. Buck’s departure. Three cheers and the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow" followed. In responding, Dr. Buck expressed sincere appreciation of the remarks and said that he would do his best to make himself worthy of the Auckland Institute and Auckland by conducting valuable research work.
