RAILWAY THEFT ALLEGATIONS

JUDGE’S COMMENT

ABOUT £IO,OOO NOW INVOLVED

Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. To-day. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day before Mr. Justice Adams. “Some of the offences are of a grave character,” said his Honour to the Grand Jury. “I regret that amongst them are not less than th: charges of rape, and one of indecent assault. “There are some serious <s. chiefly because of the large amounts involved in alleged thefts from employers by servants. Chiefly these concern the maintenance branch of the Railway Department, charges in this respect involving about £7.000. Alleged thefts bj* servants involve a total of about £IO,OOO, which is quite a serious thing.”
