RAILWAY CONDITIONS

GLEN EDEN REQUIREMENTS REQUESTS TO MEMBER A budget of argent requirements in connection with that section of the railway in the Glen Eden district was brought last evening before the member for the district, Air. H. G. R Alason, M.P., by the Glen Eden Town Board and the local school committee. PI is support was sought toward securing “wig-wag” signals for Glen View and Croydon Road level crossings, and improved lighting facilities at the Glen Eden and Croydon Road stations. According to Air. A. J. Routley, over half the school children pass across the first-mentioned crossing daily. The chairman of the board, Air. W. H. Shepherd, mentioned the increased population of the district and predicted that if something was not done at Croydon Road, and that quickly, that there would be a serious smash, particularly with a 15-minute bus service passing over the crossing Air. W. E. Martin supported both speakers. With regard to existing lighting arrangements at the Glen Eden Station, Air. W. H. Shepherd said they comprised three old-fashioned oil lamps, whereas one 100 e.p. electric light, as supplied to the district by the Waitemata Power Board, would give a deal better service at the small cost of £3 15s a year. Air. G. IT. Hayes pointed out that there was an entire absence of lighting facilities at Croydon Road Station: at that stop could only alight on one also that a passenger leaving a train side over a section of about 50 yards. There was a bank on the other side. He had had the experience of getting ofl: on the bank and having t«.« crouch down to avoid contact with the train. He, personally, had interviewed the traffic manager in connection with requirements at Croydop Road Air. Alason promised to do ah in his power to have the requests attended to.
