BOY STOWAWAYS
LURE OF THE SEA ARRIVAL BY AORANGI The lure of the rolling prairies in one case and that of the rolling ocean in the other was the cause oj. two uo>s, William Edward Wanklyn, aged 16 and 9 months, and another lad, aged 14 and 5 months, stowing away in R.M.M.S. Aorangi in Sydney last Thursday. The younger boy’s intention was to get to Vancouver and thence to Kansas, where he proposed to go on a ranch.
Wanklyn wanted to go to sea, and so the two obtained gangway passes, got aboard, and locked themselves in an empty cabin. They were found there at five o’clock on Friday morning when the ship was well away at sea. In the Police Court this afternoon, Senior-Sergeant Edwards saicl that it was difficult to know what to do with them. No doubt their parents would want them back, and there was equally no doubt that the company would want their fares. Their people would no doubt be scouring Sydney looking for them. The were both only children, it was said.
At Sergt. Edwards’s suggestion the boys were remanded for a week to enable the Sydney police to be communicated with, with a view to having them shipped back to Sydney by the Marama next Friday. Captain Davies, of the Salvation Army, took charge of Wanklyn in the meantime, while the younger boy was turned over to the care of the juvenile probation officer.
