SERIOUS CHARGES

LEANING ON TRIAL ASSAULTS ALLEGED Two charges of indecent assault against a male were preferred against Ernest Edward Leaning, boot importer, before Mr. Justice Herdman at the Supreme Court this morning. Mr. V. Meredith appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. G. P. Finlay and Mr. Beckerleg for the defence. Outlining the case for the prosecution, Mr. Meredith said that the offences with which accused was charged were alleged to have been committed on the evening of March 24 and 25. The accused had met the principal witness concerned at the Industrial Exhibition, and askec him to visit his shop. As a result of accused’s actions toward him the youth concerned had left the shop and immediately reported the matter to the police. He agreed to return to the shop the following evening, and did so accompanied by a detective, who waited outside. It would be shown that accused again attempted to commit a certain offence, upon which the youth walked out and informed the detective waiting outside, when accused was arrested.

Evidence as to the offences alleged to have been attempted by accused was given by the witness concerned. Detective McWhirter gave evidence ■s to taking the accused to the police itation. where he made a statement which he signed and handed in. (Proceeding.)
