ACROSS CONTINENTS
WOMAN’S WALK An astonishing record has been made by Miss C. E. Benham, who has just left Hong Kong on her sixth trip round the world. As much as possible of her travels is accomplished on foot, and she has now traversed tens of thousands of miles. “I think I hold a record as the first world traveller who has not written a book on my experiences,” she said. “The more people travel the less they write, and the less they travel tl>e more they seem to enlarge on it!” Miss Benham is . collecting rare flowers. Climbing the Himalayas in search of specimens, she obtained over 11,000. But when she descended to the plains they were nearly all ruined by the change of atmosphere. ON AFRICA'S “ROOF” Three times has she crossed Central Africa, and once climbed Kilimanjaro, Africa’s loftiest peak (19,710 feet.) Lions and leopards have been unpleasantly near to her tent, and more than once her bearers deserted her. She has, fortunately, a sense of humour, for she said that her chief difficulty was not wild beasts, but teaching native boys to cook! “It took one of my bos r s a week to learn how to boil an egg,” she said. Miss Benham carried calico, needles, and other things which natives appreciate in exchange for food. She had no companion except native bearers, and travelled unarmed. She is now on her way to Guatemala. “I walk for pleasure,” she said. If icing sugar is lumpy, sprinkle a little water over it, and put it in a medium oven for a few minutes. It will become quite soft. Many internal pains can be greatly relieved by heating crushed salt in a flannel bag and applying to the aching part.
