AUSTRALIA V. NEW ZEALAND
Bowlers in Auckland and throughout the Dominion as a whole will be interested to know that the suggested annual bowling contest between Australia and New Zealand is being given considerable prominence in Australian newspapers. Much importance and enthusiasm is being attached to the possibility of an international contest of this nature being made a permanent fixture between the two countries. The hope is expressed that it will come into operation within the next summer season.
Alec. Lucas is an illustration of the popular saying that you cannot keep a good man down. Last
year in his Salvation Army sweater he was a conspicuous figure on the Soccer field between the goal posts for the Y.M. club and the Auckland rep r e s e n tatives. This season he left the young Men in the hope of securing selection as goalie for the Shore
team, but the Shore selectors decided to stick to their old custodian. They offered Lucas a place in the senior eleven at full back where he plays a vigorous and clever game. However, Lucas decided to stick to the goaikeeping occupation, and on Saturday last he was found between the sticks for the Wesley senior hockey team, where he was as difficult as ever to get the ball past. With the interprovincial hockey shield matches to be played in Auckland this winter there are less unlikely happenings than Lucas gaining another representative cap as goalie for Auckland in the curved stick game.
