LATE CAPTAIN W. PORTER
FUNERAL AT PUREWA
The funeral of the late Captain William Field Porter took place at Purewa Cemetery yesterday. The captain was a member of afamffy associated with the very early history of Auckland. His grandfather. Captain William Field Porter, arrived in the Waitemata in his own brig, the Porter, in 1841. and acquired land at •Mangutangi, Miranda. The family continued to live in the district for a mng period in the locality known as Kaiawa. There the Captain Porter Just deceased grew up, and in the course of time he became a master mariner.
About 36 years ago he went to Thursday Island, where he engaged in the Torres Strait pearl-fishing industry, owning a fleet of pearling vessels. Re spent about 15 years in the Dutch Last Indies, where he not only directed Pearling operations, but also took part m the development of timber concessions and rubber and cocoanut plantations. Captain Porter had spent most life in the tropics. Latterly he bad been in indifferent health, and for the past few months had resided on hm property at Waimauku, where he died.
Captain Porter is survived by his S lfe - who is a daughter of the late Mr. Bernard Wolff, formerly well known at I names. There is one son, Mr. Wiliam Field Porter, solicitor, of Auckland, and. two daughters.
