DODGED TAX ON £19,980

“MOST GLARING” £SOO FINE FOR FALSE, INCOME RETURN (From Our Resident Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, To-day. The evasion of income-tax payments totalling £2,722 by E. R. B. Holben (Palmerston North) was described by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., as the most glaring that had come under his notice. “As to the disproprotion of the income received and the tax paid, his object, Mr. Riddell said, “seems to have been to evade the tax altogether. It is quite evident that it is a deliberate evasion. The only thing is the maximum penalty.” Holben was fined £IOO on each of five charges. The return showed that from the years 1922 to 1926 his income was £23,638. The income returned was £3,658 and the deficiency £19,980. He paid only £33 in tax, when he should have paid £2,755.
