LEFT LAMENTING
BACKERS’ BAD MEMORY WHEN RED COMET WON DOUBLE WINNER AT TAURANGA At the recent Bay of Plenty meeting Red Comet won a double in the one afternoon. His next start was at Te Rapa on Saturday, and he ran unplaced. On Wednesday he wins the Ohinewai Hack, and a huge dividend was testimony that Auckland followers of racing had forgotten that Tauranga double. For so it would seem. True, the company at Tauranga was not of the Remuera class, but the Day Comet gelding scored well at each start. On Saturday he drew number 13 and was slow' to leave the peg, finally finishing about 11th in a field of 30. As one who had the lordly sum of £ 3 on him remarked, this was hardly suffi-
cient to give him a push to be on the second day, and so he remained on the stand and saw him roll home at forlorn odds. DRAWN TWENTY-NINE That is the beauty of the game, so the hard heads will remind us. But as Red Comet was drawn 29 in a 31horse field, racegoers might be pardoned for overlooking him on Wednesday. To confuse them, Red Comet kept out of all trouble, being so far out, and although he covered much more ground than anything else in the race he had sufficient punch left in him at the close to win very nicely. It was no fluke; indeed, as a performance, even allowing for the weakness of the opposition, it was full of merit. Red Comet is owned and trained at Matamata by Mr. J. Clothier, and taking a line through Wednesday’s effort then he should' have the pleasure of leading in the six-year-old Day Comet gelding a winner again before very long.
