Mayoralty Made Him Poorer Man
MR. ARCHER’S TROUBLE TOO MANY DONATION: (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday “I am poorer because of being m j' v for the past two years, and I had to draw on a limited income meet some of the expenses of the po s tion,” declared the Mayor of Chrischurch, the Rev. J. K. Archer, to asl\ reporter.
“It is my own firm opinion,” he & “that a mayor should not be expec*. to make so many donations and g\*. because they are, however unintf tional, more or less in the nature a bribe to the electors. A Candida for the mayoralty should be treated rhis own merits from the point of vi of his suitability for the position, a: irrespective of any largesse he able to distribute among the public “A mayor is not in the position fo* what he can get out of it. and she not be put into the position for wh others can get out of him. It sho: be purely and simply a question of service.”
“Can you give any idea what costs you a year?” asked the report? “No,” replied the mayor, ‘‘but it car not cost a Labour man £SOO a year, b? cause a Labour man cannot afford spend it. A Labour man has to t to make his honorarium cover the e: penses; but the honorarium is ; small. The number of necessary o. penses to which the mayor is p: apart altogether from generosity] larger than citizens imagine.”
