AFTER 35 YEARS
CUSTOMS OFFICER RETIRES ILL-HEALTH THE CAUSE After 35 years’ service with the Customs Department, Mr. E. W. Carter will retire to-morrow, owing to ill-health. Born at Whangarei 55 years ago, Mr. Carter has held positions with the Customs Department in almost every important centre in New Zealand. He was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, where he held a scholarship. One of his fellowpupils at that time was Mr. J. Drummond, the present headmaster of the school. Before joining the Customs Mr. Carter spent two years on a farm. He entered the head office of the Customs at Wellington in 1892. The following year he was transferred to the customhouse proper as warehousekeeper and shipping clerk. From 1886 to *l9Ol Mr. Carter was in Invercargill as clerk and cashier. Then he went on to Dunedin as land-ing-waiter. During the Christchurch Exhibition Mr. Carter was sent there on duty, and then in 1907 came a transfer to Auckland. After serving as examining officer he was promoted senior examining officer, a position he held until 1913 when he became inspector. Two years ago he was promoted sub-collector, the position he still holds.
Mr. Carter will leave for Australia shortly to escape the New Zealand winter.
