Waioeka Bridge.—Good progress is being made by the contractor on the new bridge over the Waioeka River, Opotiki, _pn the Auckland-Gisborne main highway. Pile-driving will commence on the last pier in a few days if the weather holds line. ■ When completed the bridge will be one of the longest concrete bridges in New Zealand. The total length of the bridge will exceed I.oooft. and the cost will be approximately £30,000. The contractor expects to have the structure completed in good time.
Drainage Board Operations.—A meeting of the Upper Maungapiko Drainage Board was held at Cambridge. The chairman, Mr. J. W. Peake, stated that 269 chains of creek had been cleaned out and widened at a cost of 13s 4d per chain. The sum of £l9 10s will be collected according to the Act from settlers who failed to cut blackberries. Mr. W. J. North, of Te Awamutu, the willow-killing expert, has been engaged to poison willows in the board’s area, and some of the settlers are engaging him at their own expense.
