ROAD BOARD MEETING FAREWELL REMARKS Under the chairmanship of Mr. S. Scarborough members of the outgoing Mt. Roskill Road Board met for the last time yesterday. A general exchange of compliments was opened by Mr. J. R. Robertson’s allusion to the harmonious experiences of all members of the board and the staff, under the leadership of Mr. Scarborough, whose absence from the table he hoped would be Only for a brief period. Similarly felicitous remarks were made by other members, to which the chairman somewhat feelingly responded. Mr. A. Codlin wrote asking in consideration of the fact that residents in Epworth Avenue put in considerable time in mowing paths in the locality, the board sTiould provide them with level crossings free of cost, or at a much reduced rate. —The request was declined. Mr. T. S. Lamont made special reference to the satisfactory contents of the reports and hoped that when the district became a borough (a desirable position now due), Mr. Scarborough would he back in his seat either as mayor or councillor. Mr. Tozer complained of the extended delay still continuing with regard to the completion of road contracts. The engineer did not agree that there ha.d been any wilful delay and pointed out that an unusual run of holidays, combined with bad weather had materially obstructed the work. If was not, he added, to the advantage of the contractors that delays should 1* allowed. Mr. T. R. Robertson pointed .out that the contractors were under a penalty of £2 per daj* for any unjustifiable delay, and, upon his suggestion, the board decided to give the contractors one month’s notice upon this point. It was agreed that action should be taken to remedy the very unsatisfactory absence of even reasonable water pressure in the western area. Discussion of the bad condition of the paths in Waikowhai Park ended m a successful motion by Mr. Robert- % son that temporary repairs be taken . in hand forthwith. ] The engineer reported that the western side of Dominion Road would be . open to traffic on Saturday next, and that the portion between Mt. Albert Road and Duke Street probably at an earlier date. f The board sanctioned the issue oi 14 building permits, representing u total expenditure of £4,509.
