MANUREWA AFFAIRS
TOWN BOARD MEETS The Manurewa Town Board met on Monday evening, the chairman, Mr. Sexton, presiding. Those present were: McCallum, Lupton, Gallagher, Fawcett, Cox, Osborne, and the clerk. The engineer was instructed to expedite the work on the shoulders of the Great South Road footpath, the works committee to take any available opportunity of having the footpath Work proceeded with. Electric light had been installed in the workers’ homes, and tenders had been called for the painting of both houses, the tender of Mr. F. J. Lipsham for £55 being accepted. It was reported that 108 men had applied for the positior. of traffic inspector to the board, and the number had been reduced to five, periling further consideration by a meeting to be held shortly. Cases of traffic working on “green” concrete were reported, against which offences the board will take action. The clerk was Instructed to ascertain whether the contractor or the board should proceed. On the question of unemployment. It was decided to approach the Hospital Board with a request for a subsidy of £ 100, to which the Town Board would add £IOO for relief works during the coming winter. A petition of ratepayers in the Corin Avenue special rating area, which was presented to the board at the last meeting, and deferred until this meeting, asked that the annual charges be paid out of the general fund. The board could not see its way to accede to the request, on the ground that although the road in question is now used by the community generally, it is one of considerable advantage to the ratepayers Included in the area. The board is of opinion that the ratepayers concerned should bear the major portion of the cost, nfter which the matter could be reopened fm* further dismission.
