TRAVELLING GRANTS
TO SCHOOL CHILDREN EDUCATION BOARD BUSINESS The question of paying travelling allowances to holders of national scholarships, who reside at North Shore and attend Auckland Grammar Schools, was defined in a communication received at yesterday’s meeting ol the Auckland Education Board, the department advising that where a pupil could attend a fully-equipped secondary school near his home, the department would not be justified in paying boarding or travelling allowances to enable pupils to attend more distant schools. The chairman, Mr. A. Burns, said that the pupils would evidently either have to attend the Takapuna secondary school or else pay their own expenses A communication was received from the department also drawing attention to the payment of travelling expenses to students of the Auckland Training College living within four miles of tjie college by the nearest pedestrian rotfte. The chairman stated that some misunderstanding had arisen on the part of the principal of the Training College in regard to the interpretation of the regulations on that point, it being assumed that the distance referred to meant by the nearest tram route.
