IMPERIAL TARIFF
AN EMPIRE NEED SIR A. MOND’S SUGGESTION By Cable. — Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 11.40 a.m. LONDON, Tues. Sir Alfred Mond, speaking at a meeting of members of the House of Commons, pointed out that his recent trip to the Continent convinced him that leading business men increasingly favoured an economic union in Europe, raising the question as to whether Britain would join in. He added that at present there was no organisation to co-ordinate the Empire’s resources, and consequently there was a grave danger of Empire units securing only the minimum benefit.
The obvious ideal was Imperial free trade. He advocated an Imperial Trade Commission, advising the Dominions to effect tariffs. He urged the establishment of a joint Imperial tariff against foreigners to extend inter-imperial trade.—A. and NZ - Sun.
