ANOTHER “SKYSCRAPER”

A SEVEN-STOREY STRUCTURE MELVERN’S BUILDING ON THE WAY COST OF £15,000

The photograph represented above is that of the new seven-storey structure now in course of erection in High Street for Mr. O. J. Melvern. The building, which will cost £15,000, will mark the completion of the High Street widening scheme. The site is that recently occupied by the No Deposit Piano Company and adjoining the Safe Deposit Buildings. There is a frontage of 32ft to High Street by a depth of 52ft. The building will be of reinforced concrete and will provide accommodation for two shops on High Street, with the remaining floors devoted to offices. The entrance will take up the whole frontage, on either side of which will be the shops. A wide arcade will lead to the main doors, and plateglass windows for shop displays will run the length of the arcade. The floors will be tiled, and oak frames will be a feature of the interior finish. Marble steps will lead from the basement to the top floor. Mr. A. Sinclair O’Connor is the architect, and Mr. F. J. Fawcett has the work of construction in hand. The work so far has reached the first storey stage.
