BROKEN EDUCATION

HOLIDAYS AND CHANGES OVERCROWDING OF SCHOOLS (From Our Resident Reporter.} WELLINGTON, To-day. Interest is killed by too many interruptions, and no solid work is being done, said the headmaster of one Wellington school where, apart from relieving teachers, there had been eight changes on the staff, and by recent regulations three assistants were appointed for only one year, making the staff more unstable. “Little work of any value,” he said, “has been accomplished so far this year. The unsettling consequent upon the preparation for the ‘living flag’ and the Royal visit, followed soon after by the extended Easter holiday, Anzac Day and the approaching term holidays, has made school simply a succession of beginning things.” A peculiar situation arose at one district where the only attendants at the householders’ meeting were members of the outgoing committee who refused to repeat the practice of past years in renominating themselves, and passed a resolution to this effect. Overcrowding was revealed at Eastern Hutt School, where a mother could secure admission for only one of her two children, but at theTequest of the Education Board room was found for both. A few weeks later the school was visited by the Education Department’s inspector, who told the headmaster that the classes were too large and would have to be reduced.
