SYDNEY’S APPETITE FOR NEWSPAPERS

KEEN AND CRITICAL “TELEGRAPH" IN NEW FORM (From Our Resident Reporter.) SYDNEY, April 29. A general topic of' conversation in Sydney, and, in fact, over the State during the past few days, has been the changing-over of the old “Daily Telegraph’ to be a news pictorial. Sydney people are the great newspaper readers of the south; every man reads at least three newspapers a day, and any new venture Is watched with a friendly yet critical eye. This city is growing so fast that expansion and improvement of newssheets must be expected, and there seems to be no reason why all those now in existence should not flourish. The interest taken by Sydney people In the news of the day is remarkable, and moreover, they have a keen eye for any slip of the pen which may creep into a report. Such remote places as Chile and Peru are not beyond the range of these critics. The conclusion to be arrived at is that in Sydney there are living people who have visited or have come from every country in the world. A new newspaper or an old one remodelled is pounced on to the tune of over 100,000 copies and the paper stands or falls largely by that first issue, though if it fails then, it may laboriously reach a high level later on.
