ATTACK ON POLITICIAN MERCY RECOMMENDED By Cable. — Prc33 Association.—Copyright LONDON, Monday. The man Israel Melcher, who was charged with attempting to blackmail Harold Rubin, a wealthy pearl dealer and the prospective Conservative candidate for Wednesbury, pleaded guilt}* and was sentenced to imprisonment tor nine months. Melcher was recommended to mercy by Mr. Rubin. The defence acknowledged Mr. Rubin's magnanimity, and counsel laid stress on the fact that his honour and character were never assailed by Melcher.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.
