DO THEY WANT WORK?
AUCKLAND UNEMPLOYMENT PRIME MINISTER EXPLAINS The Prime Minister has written to Mrs. E. Nlcol, giving a statement concerning a list of 27 unemployed men whose cases she took up and placed before the administration. Mr. Coates explained that the matter was taken up by the officials of the Labour Department, and he was now able to advise her as to the progress made. Each of the 27 unemployed men was asked to report at the Auckland office of the Labour Department, but only seven replied. The first man stated that the money was not sufficient and that his wife did not like to be left alone. The second would not accept because the money was not sufficient. In the third “case the money was not sufficient and the man was getting casual work on the wharf. The fourth man was also getting casual work on the wharf. The fifth had signed an agreement to proceed to public works, and in the case of the sixth man his wife called and said he was getting casual employment and would not accept public work. Thus only one of the men accepted relief work. The Prime Minister concluded: ”1 send you this information so that you will be able to see that the (. >v<-rn-ment has dune everything possible to assist in placing the men concerned.'.
