WAIKATO RACES

CONCLUDE TO-MORROW MORE BIG FIELDS ENGAGED PUZZLES FOR PUNTERS The autumn meeting of the Waikato Racing Club will conclude at the Te Rapa course to-morrow, and another thrilling day’s sport is anticipated. The fields promise to be once more of Te Rapa dimensions, and it will be interesting to see if the trot of the favourites—five won the first day—will be continued. The course should now be in excellent order, for there has been no rain since the opening day on Saturday, but the ground will not have dried hard. At 11.45 a.m. the programme kicks off with the RAGLAN HURDLES HANDICAP Of £200; 12 miles.

The first day’s winner, Lady Spalpeen, has gone up a dozen pounds, for an easy win. Peter Rosa is a newcomer, . and so too are Rangatahi, Kawini, Peter Maxwell, and Dead Sweet. In fact, the field is much stronger than on the first day, and consequently the event will be harder to win. It is reasonable to suppose that the first day’s winner will have improved by the race, and, taking other factors into consideration, a fancy is declared for Lady Spalpeen, Peter Rosa, and Kawini. The second item on the card is the OHINEWAI HANDICAP Of £100; 6 furlongs. st. lb. st. lb.

There are only 30 left in, so the rest should be easy—perhaps! The running the first day disclosed the form of those that finished in the limelight, and unless something has made a remarkable improverrient as the result of a race on Saturday, form should pan out well. The three most fancied are Master Mind, Ramblin’ Kid, and Royal Doulton. The juveniles will once again have their say in the EUREKA HANDICAP Of £150; 6 furlongs.

It seems to have been an unwritten rule at Te Rapa in the past that the winner of the two-year-old race the first day should prevail again the second, but one has a fancy that precedent on this occasion is going to be upset. Speechless scored very nicely on Saturday, and the track to-morrow will better suit the filly, and yet she is within 101 b of Lorna Doone, Carlaris, High Tide, and Cunningham’s pair, Standfast and Whakarite, are susceptible to improvement, although they will have to come on a stone at least to have a chance with Lorna Doone and Speechless. The principal event on the programme is the TE RAPA HANDICAP Of £500; 1 mile.

This is the big field we are getting quite accustomed to. It is very difficult to reduce the 22 by half in an effort to find the possibles, but here goes: Pegaway, Day Guard (third in the Easter), Hipo, Papatu, Flying Juliet, Master Doon, Merry Jest, Charlady, Bright Knight, Mosaic, and True Blood. Of Merry Jest it can be said that she has won over seven furlongs, and of True Blood that he ran a great race for a mile at Awapuni last Thursday, at which stage he was a winner. On. recent running one cannot afford to ignore the chances of the consistent Master Doon, True Blood, and Flying Juliet. Even bigger is the list of acceptors for the TE RORE HANDICAP Of £150; 7 furlongs. st. lb. st. lb.

The top weight has been raised 111 b, and he is now up where the good horses go—which he is—but at a halfstone better terms one cannot picture Bright Dawn beating him. Fostina Lente is too unlucky, and War Officer was not disgraced the first day, finishing fourth. Catapult has a much more difficult task here, and one cannot plump for a®y of the others with any degree of confidence, so that once again it will have to be left to Paddon, Bright Dawn, and War Officer to pull backers through. The field for the cross-country contest is going to be much better than on Saturday, with the following nine engaged; HUNTLV STEEPLECHASE Of £250; about 3 miles.

Beau Cavalier has gone up a stone, and if he jumps better that ought not to stop him. However, Pendennis now comes in on 91b better terms, and thavt will bring them together, perhaps. Of Kendal one must be uncertain, knowing what he can do, and witnessing his feeble display on the first day. There are some new ones in the field, but it looks as if Pen-

dennis and Beau Cavalier will again have a duel. Twenty-six is the main in the open sprint, the FLVING HANDICAP Of £3OO 6 furlongs.

This is a real puzzler, even allowing for the fact that Kingfield and Flying Juliet, first and second the first day, are now out of it. There are some new ones engaged, including the lightly-weighted Tinoiti and others, but the opening day’s form will probably be best to follow. Nancy Lee, Aussie, and Oration may be the pick. The Oaks winner, second on Saturday, will probably take on the big mile event. The curtain is to be rung down with the RANGIRIRI HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP Of £200; 1 mile.

stone between them, and with a good run it will probably be a great race. Under the higher scale, Ballachulish will have the services of a strong horseman, which he requires. There are others in the same category, of course, and therefore it is expected that many of the runners will show considerable improvement. Th *\ se fancied are Ballachulish, Ring Ihe Bell, and Gold Jacket.
