NORTHERN HURDLES TRIAL

The Century Hurdles at Wanganui this month, run over a distance of two and a quarter miles, is likely to be in the nature of a tryout for the Great Northern Hurdles. Over the sticks at Wanganui, however, is a very different proposition to the obstacles to be cleared at Eillerslie, although on a few occasions horses successful in the Wanganui event have come north and delivered the goods. There are eighteen entered for the Century Hurdles, including Zircon, Day Bell and Rangatahi, from these parts. It s a nice trio, and if they go to the post they should do the province credit. Zircon displayed plenty of pace in his races on the flat at Ellerslie recently, and Day Bell showed himself up as one of the most promising young jumpers in the country. Rangatahi has already won on the Wanganui course, for he scored in the hack hurdles there twelve months ago, and incidentally brought off a nice coup for his many northern supporters, for the price was a big double figure one. Great Northern Hurdles candidates engaged in the Century are Zircon, Day Bell, Euchre, Ngata, Brigadier Bill, Starshell, Nukumai, Maunga, Rangatahi, Koauau, Comical and Kalakaua.
