CR. G. BROWNLEE LOSES HIS SEAT
OFFICIAL COUNT OF VOTES FOR CITY COUNCIL Though the official count has been completed in connection with the City Council, Harbour Board and Hospital Board elections, the official figures are not yet available, as there are still a few declaration votes to be finally decided. The returning officer, Mr. P. F. Notley, stated this morning, however, that these could not affect the result, which means that Cr. G. Brownlee drops from 21st place in the list to 22nd, being replaced by Mr. A. J. Stallworthy, and thereby losing his seat on the council. Mr. Notley stated this afternoon that there was a difference in the official count, with many of the declaration votes included, of about 50 votes, and the few remaining declaration votes could not alter the result. He also stated that the official count in connection with the hospital and harbour boards did not show any alteration in the placings, though there had been a few minor alterations in the totals. Out of some 300 declaration votes only about 40 will be allowed. A number of the voters concerned were actually on the rolls, and the reason why they were not allowed to vote in the usual way has yet to be investigated. It appears, however, that in one or two cases the names were spelt wrongly, and appeared in a different part of the roll as a result. Probably it was also the case that in one or two instances the voters were told outside that they were not on the roll, and sufficient investigation was not made by the poll clerks to remove the misapprehension.
