Cros, a Parisian resident, anticipated Edison in patenting the phonograph. Cros is said to have deposited a sealed description of the mechanism of his invention six months before the American inventor. The Frenchman was of a Bohemian disposition, however, and died in poverty 10 years later. —A. and N Z.
