LAUNCH BURNED
FIRE AT KOHIMARAMA BENZINE TANKS EXPLODE The Edna White, a powerful motorlaunch valued at over £2,000, and owned by Captain H. G. White, was completely destroyed by fire at the Kohimarama Wharf on Saturday evening. The benzine tanks exploded and added to the fury of the flames, which soon enveloped the launch. Although the St. Hellers Fire Brigade turned out the hose was not long enough to reach the boat, even when it was towed to the beach away from the wharf. After Captain White had disembarked his passengers at about 830 o’clock on Saturday evening he stepped on to the wharf. Looking back he saw that the launch was ablaze. He jumped back into the boat and opened the cabin door, but found that it was burning fiercely. The captain retreated on to the wharf to escape the explosion of the benzine tanks. The Edna White was built in Auckland in 1912. She was 40ft. .long, 15 tons gross register and was propelled by a 48 h.p. engine. She was one of the best-known launches on the harbour.
