JOY KING WINS MANAWATU STAKES
MIREUSONTA’S SPRINT MORE SURPRISES AT AWAPUNI (.Special to THE SUN.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Saturday. The second day of the Manawatu meeting was held in fine, but cold weather. The totalisator handled £25,016, against £30,170 on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £45,241, against £64,099, a decrease of £ 15,858. HURDLES TO ELEVATE Fourteen horses faced the starter in the Karere Hurdles and the bracket. Brigadier Bill-Omahu, was again made favourite. Kalakaua and Brigadier Bill were early leaders, followed by Inferno, Hautawa, Santonio, Omaliu and Vexatious Kalakaua led over the fence into the straight, with Inferno and Santonio next. Down the back stretch Kalakaua still held the lead, but Comedy Prince was alongside him, with Elvaette just behind, and Vexatious, Brigadier Bill and Bonny Rill next. Kalakaua was first at the turn home, but in the run to the judge Elvaette "and Comedy Prince asserted themselves and the former went on to win by a length and a-half. Brigadier Bill was two lengths away, and Kalakaua, Sottana, Vexatious and Bonny Rill next. RISING STAR’S WIN Hathor carried most money in the Lockwood Handicap, but sixth was the best the mare could do at the finish. Berinthia was quickest to find her feet at the start, and soon established a three-lengths’ lead from Thomond, Waicullus, Hathor, Rising Star and Partaga. The sister to Civility held the advantage until passing the stands, but stopped to nothing and in a close finish Rising Star got the verdict by a neck from Partaga. Waicullus was a head away, and Kalos fourth, a head further away. Manly and Hathor were next. A GREAT TUSSLE Merry Damon and Mandane were the elect of the backers in the Tamatete Handicap, but Clarinda came to light at the end and scored nicely in a close finish. Pita assumed the lead early from Scotch Mixture, Vertigern, Clarinda, Mery Damon and Royal Divorce, Mandane being well back. The order was much the same going down the back, where the leader increased his advantage and Vertigern ran into the second position. The field bunched at the turn, a half dozen being in it. Clarinda and Yoma had a great tussle over the last 50 yards, the former getting there by a short head, with Mandane a length and ahalf away. Ngata was close up fourth, followed by Merry Day, Scotch Mixture, Merry Damon, Novar, Pita and Royal Divorce. SURPRISE FOR BACKERS Polyphemus, Lady Bentinck and Vivo were the best backed in the Stoneyhurst Handicap, but a big surprise was in store for the investors.
STAR PERFORMER The owner of Paddon has always held the Archiestown gelding in high regard. When the same sportsman was racing White Comet it was stated that he had declared that Paddon was the better. If he did say that, he k new what was what. Paddon won the hack mile on Saturday like a Gloaming. Sixty yards from the post he had collared the leaders, and won in a common canter by four lengths. Indeed, the hardest part Tinker had to do was to prevent Paddon from winning by too much. He was pulling him up lengths before he came to the judge.
Miss Hupana, Peneus and Ngawati were the leaders to the course proper, where Deluge and Lady Bentinck were in front from Star Area, Polyphemus and Bevis. Polyphemus got snowed in at the turn out of the back and Miss Hupana led into the straight from Deluge, Lady Bentinck, Ngawati, Bevis, Polyphemus and Peneus, who was coming fast on the outer. In a slashing finish Bevis came through, and with Peneus, Vivo and Ngawati crossed the line together, half heads separating them. Deluge, Miss Hupana, Ngawati and Polyphemus were next to finish. STAKES TO JOY KING Only a quartette faced the starter m the Manawatu Stakes, Reremoana being entrusted with £595 and Joy King with £528, while Tukia was neglected. Gascony took the lead from the start, followed by Joy King Tukia, and Reremoana. This order was maintained down the back and lound the turn for home, where Joy jy as - a length behind Gascony, with Tukia and Reremoana together two lengths back. Joy King crept up as they ran to the judge, headed Gascony at the half-distance, and went on to win by three-quarters of a length, with Reremoana two lengths awav just in front of Tukia. THE FAVOURITE WINS TT ° f^- the ten starte rs in the Cloverlea Handicap, Great Charter carried £2lB more than Lady Limond, and the result justified the betting. Great Charter jumped into the lead at the barrier-rise, and was never headed winning by five lengths. In the early stages Vigilance. Callanmore and Sarchee followed the favourite, but Sarchee was alongside Vigilance at the turn for home, and finished a neck in front of Lady Limond, who was foltowed by Vigilance and Callanmore. MIREUSONTA’S SURPRISE Crown Area was made favourite for the Borough Handicap on the strength of his fine performance the first day while Benzora and Orchid were also entrusted with good money. Mireusonta and Benzora were the first to show out, being attended by First Acre, Decoy Bird and Standard, while Crown Area and Archeen were the last pair. Into the straight the order was Mireusonta, Licinius, Decoy Bird Benzora. Crown Area and First Acre! There was a wonderful finish, Mireu-* sonta, First Acre, Crown Area, Decoy Bird and Benzora going over the line
with heads between them, and the) were placed in that order. Arched headed the second division. SURPRISE IN THE FINAL The bracketed pair, Orazone an Barryander, were the best backed i the concluding event, the Adderstoc Handicap, but they finished out oft! money, although the former wasagai unlucky. Manly was quickest into fc; stride from Lin Arlington, Hyxnc* trason, Gardant and Mandarine. A the home turn Gardant came aws and went on to win by a length a& a-half from Manly, with Henna tfe same distance off. Lin Arlingtc' Capitulation, Mister Gamp and Ort zone were next.
