BALDOWA’S RETURN AT TIMARU
WINS PRINCIPAL EVENT SPRINT TO EATON BELLS (.Special to THE SUN.) TIMARU, Saturday. The autumn meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club concluded in bright sunshihe. There was a good attendance and the track was in splendid order. The totaiisator for the two days handled £23,011, against £30,172 last year. TOO IMPETUOUS After being made to carry his weight all the way in the Pukaki Hurdles, Dubious again felt the pinch in the straight and was beaten into third place. More patiently ridden he might do better. Goldtown made the pace all the way over the last five furlongs, and Dubious, Red Heather, Oriflamb and Bonatic were his only serious attendants. Dubious was at the head of his four opponents when the last fence was negotiated. Oriflamb then got to the front, but stopped badly fifty yards from home. Goldtown then headed his colleagues, with Dubious and Bonatic doing their best. In the run to the judge Bonatic stayed on well and won by two lengths from Goldtown, who beat Dubious by a head. Oriflamb and Red Heather were the next to finish. Coastguard fell at the fourth fence. Bonatic has only to continue to race generously to win further hurdle events. A TIGHT FINISH Card Trick and Money Peer monopolised the betting for the April Stakes.. Card Trick and Court Jester began smartly and cleared out from their opponents. They were still well clear when they entered the straight, where Princess Mafalda and Ark Royal commenced to bridge the gap. Twenty yards from home Princess Mafalda headed Card Trick and was engaging Court Jester in a stiff fight when Ark Royal came like lightning on the outside and beat them by a head, Court Jester being second and Princess Mafalda third.
Had Princess Mafalda not lost ground through receiving a bump soon after the start, she would have wou. Court Jester is a two-year-old brought over from Australia by J. McCombe. He is a good sort. After the race an inquiry was held into the running of Ark Royal as compared with that of the previous day. After hearing evidence, and taking into consideration the state of the going, no action was taken. ROB SCORES Rob and Volant were the favourite selections for the Pareora Handicap. For the first four furlongs Nine of Spades and Lava made the pace, with Sweet Melody and Rob just in behind them. Then came Receipt, with Volant and Serotina in the last division. At the distance post Rob got to the front and Receipt put in her challenge, with Serotina and Volant making up their ground. Under pressure Rob outstayed Receipt to win by a neck. Serotina was a head further away third, with Volant next. Under favourable conditions Rob is pretty useful over six furlongs. BIG EVENT TO BALDOWA Set Sail was backed down to a short price for the Autumn Handicap. She began well, but with a furlong covered she was steadied. Ellis brought her along at the bend for home. But at the distance she was beaten. Booster was in front from the rise of the barrier and remained in the lead until Baldowa.came through from sixth position and took charge. That was a furlong from home, from there on Baldowa silenced the party and won easily by the three lengths, with Booster a length in front of the Harp. Ophir was fourth. Mountain Lion was with Booster for four furlongs, where he commenced to drop back. At this stage of the trip Fresco joined Booster and the pair kept together till the straight was reached, then Fresco had enough. Balbo was prominent to the distance also, and then retired Ophir finished well on the outside, but nothing had any chance with the winner. Courtly Roseagain failed to leave the barrier correctly/ HOT ONE DOWNED Lucy Locket was regarded as a certainty for the Temuka Hack Handicap. She was prominent a furlong from home, but at the finish she was beaten into third place. She had a good passage Royal Tractor led for five furlongs, where he faded out. Dark Spot and Solzia were also in the picture, but when it came to business Peho came through and went on to win by a length from Moratorium, who made a great run from a long way back and cut Lucy Locket out of second money. Master John also finished well. BLUE HALL’S STEEPLES Adjutor was sent out a hot favourite for tlxe Wai-Iti Steeplechase, but had to doff-his hat to Blue Hall and Frisco Mail. King Abbey led for 13 furlongs from Blue Hall, Frisco Mail, Palencia and Adjutor. At that stage King Abbey and Palencia were beaten. Blue Hall then drew away from Frisco Mai! and Adjutor and went on to win easily by five lengths from Frisco Mall who fenced much better than on ths first day. Adjutor went a solid race into third-place. Muzzle fell at the first fence. Over a two mile journey Blue Hall will win again. ONE FOR HAPPY QUEEN Brightiing was better backed than Happy Queen in the Beaeonsfield Handicap. Brightiing was in the rear in the early part of the contest. He made a forward move at the bend for home, but could not come on. Flaming Ray and Ascetic led out with Green Cloth heading the others. At the end of six furlongs Ascetic dropped back. Flaming Ray and Green Cloth showed the way into the straight, where Happy | Queen put in her claim: She soon had | her opponents’ measure and won very j easily by two lengths from Eyed Ova. ! who finished well to gather second i money. Beaming and Shandre were j the next to finish. Happy Queen is a useful filly over a j mile course. At the instigation of the owner of Beaming, an inquiry was ! held into alleged bumping that took i place during the race. After taking I evidence no action was taken. WON ALL THE WAY Overhaul, Eaton Bells and Thorndale were entrusted with big money
for the Seadown Handicap. Eaton Bells soon got to the front, being closely attended by Mime, Courtly Bose, Overhaul, Fairy Herald and Thorndale. With half the journey covered Eaton Bells was joined by Courtly Rose, with Mime, Thorndale and Fairy Herald just in behind them. Then came Bilbo and Overhaul. When the straight was reached Mime, Fairy Herald and Thorndale challenged Eaton Bells, who won by a head from Mime, who finished a length in front of Fairy Herald. Bilbo and Thorndale were next to finish. At the distance Overhaul made an effort on the fence, but failed to respond, finishing sixth.
