The course was In good order, although a bit soft along the back. A Small Field Beau Cavalier was favourite in the Linley Steeplechase, which attracted six starters, Kendal being the only * other candidate backed with any spirit. The contest proved a tliree-horse affair. The favourite, Kawa and Pe:idennis were in the van for the first * round. Kawa dropped out of the running, and Hazelburn took his place Beau Cavalier and Pendennis were together over the last five furlongs. The favourite had a slight advantage at the last fence and won by one and a half lengths from Pendennis. Hazelburn was twenty lengths away third - and Kendal, who lost several lengths at the start was fourth. The other ~ pair finished well back. KingfielcTs Success Delightment and Oration were the first to show out in the President’s Handisap, for which the consistent Kingfield was made a good favourite, while there was solid support for Nancy Lee When the field had settled down, Kingfield was showing the way to Nancy Lee, Flying Juliet, Royal Blood, Ned Kelly, Dan Quin, Archeno and York Abbey. Flying Juliet assumed command as they raced for home, hotly pursued by Kingfield, King Lu, Nancy Lee, Ned Kelly and Dan Quin. In a good finish Kingfield won by threeparts of a length from Flying Juliet, with Nancy Lee a neck away third, and Archeno fourth. At the start Prince Abbey was soon in front after dwelling, leading along the back from llnrangi, Hyde Park, Bright Knight and Athenry. At the half-mile the favourite ran into the lead, and he had half a length’s advantage over Bright Knight at the turn for home, with Athenry and Rarangi close up. and Prince Abbey and Quincoma next, and King Smock commencing a run from third to last. Once straightned up, the favourite was beaten, and Bright Knight was left clear. He looked a certain winner half-way up the running, but King Smock was putting in some good ones and he got up on the post to win by a head.
