BISHOP VIARD’S WORK (From Our Resident Reporter.J WELLINGTON, To-day. Yesterday was the 77th anniversary of the foundation of the Catholic Church in Wellington. Appropriate reference was made to this in the Basilica when the history of the growth of Catholicism was traced from May 1, 1850, when Bishop Philip Via.rd brought five Marist Fathers and ten lay brothers and commenced the education organisation which now assumes substantial proportions. Bishop Viard died on June 2, 1872, and was succeeded by Bishop Redwood, who took up the work in November, 1874.
