ORPHANS’ CLUB
OPENING SESSION A large attendance at the opening gathering of the Auckland Orphans’ Club on SatLirday evening augurs well for a successful season. Included among the guests of the evening were Mr. Justice Frazer, president of the Arbitration Court; Mr. W. Scott, a member of the Arbitration Court; Messrs. A. W. Blair, A. J. Baker and Dudley Dobson; members of the water commission, the city engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush; Mr. Arthur Towsey, a former conductor of the orchestra; the Mayor of Auckland (Mr. G. Baildon); Messrs. W. Coldicutt. and A. E. Greenslade, Mayors-elect of Onehunga and Northcote respectively. The president, Mr. W. Wallace, conveyed to the three last named the congratulations of local orphans upon their success at the polls. In addition to a number of other guests there were also present representatives of the Auckland Savage Club, the Philistines' Club and several suburban Orphans’ clubs. Feeling reference was also made by the chairman to the death, during the recess, of Messrs. A. E. Gilbert, J. Wallet, P. Dimery, G. G. Webb, F. Meyrick and D. Archibald. The orchestra, under Mr. G. P. Cater, played the overture, “Poet and Peasant” (Suppe); seelctions from “H.M.S. Pinafore’’ (Sullivan); and “The Old Brigade.” Songs were contributed by Messrs. E. Thomas, S. Pritchard, A. Gear and A| Ripley; monologues by Mr. Dan. Flood; elocutionary items by Mr. Culford Bell; violin solos by Master N. Walker; vocal quartets by the Lyric Four (Messrs. A. Ripley. Ji. Richards, A. McElwain and E. Thomas) ; and lightning sketches by Mr. P. Saunders. The accompanists were Messrs. Cyril Towsey and T. Sparling.
