Heavy fighting is reported in the region of Chiu Kiang and the Communists are making a desperate stand to stem Chiang Kai-shek’s advance on Hankow.—A. and N.Z. NOTE TO MR. Official messages received in London report that despite the British Consul’s protests and Marshal Chiang Kai-shek’s expli.it orders to the contrary, the commander of the Sixth Cantonese Army billeted troops in the British Consulate and British residences at Chiu Kiang. The troops looted the buildings in which they were billeted, and the British Consul’s further protests have so far been without result. The “Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent reports that owing to divergences between Washington and the other protocol powers, their Ministers at Peking are still marking time with the elaboration of the second Note to Mr, Chen. If the dispatch of the Note is much longer delayed Chiang Kai-shek may have evicted the Cantones Govern ment im Hankow before it is sent. The problem is to decide whether, it should not be addressed to Chiang Kai-shek.
