Cycling Innovation Proves Great Success
BIG ENTRIES FOR SEALED HANDICAP GAINSBOROUGH AND RAE WIN (By VELOS.) Ideal weather favoured the Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club for its opening 14-mile open handicap on Saturday. The Mangere course was in firstclass order. Prior to the start of the race, the secretary introduced Mr. P. A. Richards, of the Dunlop T 3 re Company, to the riders. Mr. Richards promised to give the sport every assistance he could, and by way of emphasing the fact offered a set of Dunlop tyres to the winner of the fastest time for Saturday’s race. This was won by Rae, 35min, who also won the race. There were 16 starters, four of whom started from scratch. The Manukau Cycling Club held a 22-mile sealed handicap the same afternoon, which caused quite a sensation, as far as competition is concerned. This race proved that stamina is to be
found in quite a number of the younger riders, and the club must be congratulated on the innovation. Byrne proved too good for the others, doing the distance in the fastest time, lhr 6sec.
