SPEEDY CRAFT IN ACTION

POWER BOATS HAVE FINAL RACE OF THE SEASON The final launch and speed-boat races of the season, organised by the New Zealand Power Boat Association, were held on the harbour on Saturday. The programme included races for speed-boats, fast cruisers and small boats driven by outboard motors. Conditions were ideal for racing, the light south-east wind leaving the surface of the water practically unruffled. The courses were laid off the end of the King’s Wharf. The course for speedboats and cruisers was 2| knots in length, representing one lap. The handicaps were conceded at the start, so that the first boat over the finishing line was the winner. Speed Boats.—Only four boats out of nine entrants started in the general handicap for speed-boats. Spot, lmin. 50sec. handicap, completed the three laps in 15min. 7sec., Agnes G. (7min.), in 16min. 58sec., and Baby Dev. (Bmin.), in 20min. 21sec. The result was: Agnes G., 1; Baby Dev., 2; Spot, 3. Miss X. (scr.) retired after completing two laps. The fast runabout Bonzo, which had been entered for the speed races, caught fire off Devonport early in the afternoon. Although the blaze was suppressed before very serious damage was done, Bonzo was unable to start. The Burt Cup for Cruisers.—The race for the Burt Cup, for cruisers steered by a lady, had five competitors. Most of the boats were well handled and the race proved interesting throughout. The race was twice round the course, and the order of finishing was as follows: My Girl (6min. -30 sec.), 3h. 38min. 3sec.; Lady Margaret (9min.), 3h. 38min. 55sec.: Tasman (smin 30sec.), 3h. 38min. 56sec.; Tarua (lmin. 50sec.), 3h. 39min. 57sec.; Edwina (ISmin. 20sec.), 3h. 43min. 3Ssec. My Girl won easily, but there was a keen race for second place between Lady Margaret and Tasman, one lsec. separating them. Result: My Girl, 1; Lady Margaret, 2; Tasman, 3. Speed Boat Race for Commodore's Cup.—There were four starters and there was keen racing over the three laps of the course. The finishing times were: Baby Dev (Bmin 15sec handicap), 4h. lOmin. 56sec.; Miss X. (scr), 4hr llmin 40sec; Miss Devonport (lmin 20sec), 4hr 13min 21sec; Spot (2min 40sec), 4hr 15min 40sec. Result: Baby DeV, 1; Miss X, 2; Miss Devonport, 3. Miss X did the course in 13min lOsec. Rowboat Outboards. Gay I. (46sec.), 1; Gay 11. (32sec.), 2; It (scr.), 3. Racing Outboards.—Bacteria, 1; Bonnie, 2; Lockwood Ash, 3. Miss Spitfire, one of the competitors, swamped and the occupants were rescued by the hire launch Sea Wolf.
