HOLLYHOCKS
Beside the path on either hand Red, yellow, white and pink they stand— The hollyhocks, as straight and tall As angels are; I think from all Their lovely eyes that stare and stare, There is not in me anywhere One hidden spot, and “Child!” they say, “Tell us, have you been good to-day?” And if, when I have thought awhile, I nod, they bow to me and smile, Till up and down the path I go As happy as a king; but, oh, When all ashamed I hang my head. How stiffly do they frown instead!
