Fireman Lost Overboard From Trawler Countess

TRAGEDY OFF TIRI TIRI

Falling overboard from the steam trawler Countess, unseen and unheard by anyone on the vessel, Sidney Veale, a fireman, was drowned some four miles the other side of Tiri Tiri about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

The fatality, which is shrouded in mystery, occurred while the Countess was trawling in a calm sea with a light wind blowing. Mr. Alexander Reid, who was on watch, did not see Veale come on deck, nor did he see him fall into the water. He noticed Veale struggling in the sea and immediately gave the alarm. The engines weer stopped and a boat lowered. Veale was now some 100 yards astern. Quick work had the boat rushing to the rescue, but Veale

suddenly disappeared, and although the boat stood by for some time he did not reappear. Veale, who is a married man with three children, lived in Great South Road, Manurewa. He was employed by Messrs. Sanford, Ltd., fish merchants, and had been only two weeks a fireman on the firm’s trawler Countess, although he had been ail employee in other work for a number of years. The scene of the' fatality is 22 miles from Auckland.
