UPKEEP OF HIGHWAYS
PETROL TAX SUGGESTED COUNTY COUNCIL PROBLEMS At yesterday’s meeting of the Waitemata County Council the problem of the upkeep of highways came in for con: iderable discussion. Mr. F. W. Grigg referred to the volume of city traffic over the roads which made their upkeep almost impossible. The Main Highways Board should tackle the problem with a view to taking over the roads. Messrs. G. O’Halloran and T. Burns also spoke on the matter. Mr. Mason thought that the solution of the problem lay in the Main Highways Board taking over the highways. A tax on petrol would meet the case as far as revenue was concerned. He promised to give the council every assistance in its endeavour to find a means of relieving its position. HEAVY TRAFFIC BY-LAWS The fact that the running of certain motor-buses in the Waitemata county would have to be discontinued if the heavy traffic by-law prohibiting traffic in excess of three tons during the months of May and September were enforced, was mentioned in the engineer’s report. A suggestion that the by-law should be amended, granting an exception in the case of vehicles used in passenger traffic, was thought feasible, and the clerk was instructed to prepare a report for presentation to the next meeting.
