DISILLUSIONED!
WIDOW IMMIGRANT LURED BY PLACARDS (From Our Resident Reporter.) ■WELLINGTON, To-day. A distressing case of a disillusioned young widow who was induced by attractive placards to migrate from Eng land to New Zealand was revealed by the chairman of the Welfare Commit tee of the Hospital Board, Mr. G. Petheriek. The widow sold her home and brought her three children out at a cost of £IOO. and now Is a very disappointed woman, said Mr. Petheriek. Mrs. McVicar: She vill get over that. Mr. C. H. Chapman said that the gross misrepresentation which doubtless existed could in many cases be traced to the shipping companies and the Government.
Mr. Van Staveren: The Government cannot be blamed for this. She paid her own passage. . The chairman of the board, the Hon C. M. Luke, said that this was a genuine case. Apparently the placards in England are very enticing. New Zealand placards are made more so than others.
The question of assisting the widow back to England is being considered.
